“Y’all—did you know that Virginia businesses are not actually required to provide paid sick leave to all their employees? Because of this, more than 1.2 million Virginians face the impossible decision between a paycheck and their health on a daily basis. As a teacher, this dramatically increases the chances of parents working while sick and potentially passing coronavirus to their kids who in turn may bring it to schools once they are open. I’m grateful that my school system has paid sick leave because it gives me the peace of mind that my health is important in this crazy year and always. Business owners all across Virginia should adopt paid sick day policies to keep their workplaces free from illness so we can continue to work toward opening schools, businesses and everyone can feel more safe. #PaidSickDays”
Healthy Workers Means Healthy Business
As a teacher, Caitie Meehan is doing everything she can to get schools open and keep them that way. As a Virginia teacher, she knows she has to work doubling hard to make it happen. That’s because most Virginian workers — and therefore Virginian parents — don’t have access to the paid sick leave that will keep their homes COVID-free, and the potential for infection among children will stay far higher than it should.
